ALBUMS

1. Motorama – Calendar

Motorama seems to be the best modern post-punk band ever. And it doesnt seem to change. Every album so far is nearly perfect, and if you are looking for that dark, melancholic postpunk-mood you will get it. These russians never disappoint.
Calendar offers the wellknown sounds: slowed down instrumentals and haunting vocals. If you loved the awesome album "alps" you will love "calendar". They go on tour soon, so make sure to see them live and if you are interessted in their previous work, you can download all old albums and eps for free on their website. Nice!

2. Les Yeux Sans Visage – Tomorrow Is A Million Years

No, we are not in 1980s Manchester, although their sounds might seem like it. LYSV are a band from switzerland who perfectly understand it to bring that old melancholic postpunk feeling into the modern times. This album is their debut, and i can only imagine how great the future releases will be. They got the biggest potential in the modern post-punk-scene, so keep an eye on them and check out this perfect album.

3. Extra Life – Dream Seeds

Writing this feels like an obituary. Extra Life, probably my favorite band of all times, just recently disbanded. They have been the most unique band when it come to experiment with music and create new sounds. The only band in this list i can't put a label on to explain their musical style. You just have to listen to yourself. The general description of "avantgarde" fits pretty good, and if you are willing to follow them on their dark road down into the rabbithole, you might experiance a total new look on music.
Big words, but if you are open to experimental music that doesnt follow any structures or genre, you probably enjoy it.
Dream Seeds is their last album, but like the others, perfect from beginning to end. Its not as easy to get into as it was for me with "made flesh" but since you need a lot of listenings anyway, it doesnt really matter. The song "blinded beast" is more like a piece then a simple song. Dont skip through it, take your time and let it increase. Its a journey from slow sounds to an powerful outburst. You certanly have to be in the right mood and receptive for it – if you want the perfect experiance, then listen to this album alone in your car at 4 am in the morning, whilst driving through some dark woods. I didnt it this way, and was infected right away ;)

4. Terror Bird – Secret Rituals

Terror Bird is an canadian wave-band. They play dark songs with a hypnotizing feel to it. The female singer definately casted a spell over me. A nearly perfect album, so refreshingly different, you surely havent heard anything like it before. Perfect melodies, an intense mood an unique vocals make this record stand out. Give it a try:

__________

5. 2:54 – 2:54

When a band names themself after a part of a melvins-song, you can be assured that they play good music. After some great single-releases their debutalbum in 2012 unsurprisingly was going to be awesome. Their sound can be described as gloomy indierock. Their songs certainly have dark melodies, hypnotic female vocals and heavy riffing. An albums that pleases shoegaze-girls and metal-guys aswell.

[thanks to Hu Jintao the gema, the germans arent allowed to listen to the albumversion on youtube, so here you got the live version instead:]

__________

6. Godspeed You! Black Emperor – 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!

The release of their new album took me by surprise. After 10 years they came back with "'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!" and like everyone, i was curious on what to expect. Well i wasnt disappointed. The stayed heavy and they show it to you right on the first track. If you never heard them, it might even be a good album to start with. They play heavy instrumental postrock, which you should check out live, if you have the chance, since this type of music doesnt completely unfolds itself until you experiance it at a concert. This album brought them back with a bang. It shows that they are the biggest name in post-rock for a reason, they are still in the leading position.

__________

7. Get Well Soon – The Scarlet Beast O'Seven Heads

Get Well Soon is a german band who plays romantic, dark music. It is an concept album, perfectly constructed and you should listen to the whole album in one piece. The Songs range from slow and quiet to powerful and orchestral. The classic male vocals with gloomy melodies could be the soundtrack to some epic movie. Definately listen to this album whilst drinking red wine from an golden goblet. Just sayin.

__________

8. Lebanon Hanover – The World Is Getting Colder

The World is Getting Colder is the name of their albums and certainly, coldwave can't get any colder then this. Their minimal synth-sound is simple and danceable. Just few weeks ago they released their second full length album of 2012 which is equally as good. Hard decision to pick the better albums, but since their first release already did grow on my for almost a year, it has to be the on ein the list. This is a band that will always stay underground but thats excactly where they belong. So get down in your batcave, put on some black makeup and listen to their records.

__________

9. Holograms – Holograms

As i first listened to their song "hidden structures" i immediatley got the "love will tear us apart" vibe. This is a good thing, right!? They continue this vibe on their selftitled album. Young and raw postpunk with catchy melodies. This debut could be a bedroom production but thats excatly the feeling that a record like this needs. Well done, A+

__________

10. The Kabeedies – Soap

Soap is the feelgood album of 2012. Period. Most desrcibe their music as ska-pop/indie, and this fits perfectly. Its an really easy listening, perfect for the summertime, and tropical surfmelodies with singalong refrains leave nobody cold. Simple as that.

http://thekabeedies.bandcamp.com/

__________

11. The Lumineers – The Lumineers

This album is certainly the most harmless one in my list. But you wouldnt expect anything else from sweet folk-music. The most important thing for folkmusic is the melody, and they seem to have an golden hand for that issue. Forget mumford & sons, the lumineers show you how to do it perfectly. Support those underdogs:

http://thelumineers.com/

__________

12. Tu Fawning – A Monument

A Monument is the perfect album-title because their music simply is monumental. They play well crafted and atmospheric songs using whats seems to be an huge amount of different instruments. But they definately know how to play them. Their music overall feels very "mature" and they left nothing to chance, although it sometimes sounds like they are in a jam session and get totally lost in their music. When you got the time, listen to the album in one piece.

http://tufawning.bandcamp.com/

__________

13. Reptile Youth – Reptile Youth

Pure Energy! Reptile Youth would have probably been in this list, even if they didnt released an album. I know it sounds weird but their history of getting known is quite fascinating. As i experianced for myself, this band was getting famous from mouth to mouth propaganda. They appeared on a lot of underground-festivals in 2012 without one single record released. But the people still showed up, and crowd got bigger with every show. Of course their songs they had on youtube to this point have been a big reason for that, because they are just really good electropunk/indietronic music. But the biggest factor for their mysterious success is definately their behaviour. This band is just insane and freaks out on every show. I can fairly say that reptile youth are the coolest dudes on the planet and have the most energetic concerts you will ever see. If you stand in the crowd, chances are big that the singer jumps on you, kisses you or tears down the whole venue. You just have to see it for yourself. Oh yeah, the album is a great listen too, full of earworms ;)

__________

14. Crystal Castles – III

The third album of crystal castles is confident. Confident because they just do what they want, without giving a single fuck if it will work on a hipster dancefloor or not. And to be honest, the hipsters will love them anyways. Its certainly not as easy like the previous records, but if you give it some more listenings, this album grows on you. At the end i am probably even convinced, that its their best album so far.

[private upload not allowed:]

__________

15. Komplikations – Step Forward

This band sounds old. But i dont mean that in a bad way. They sound refreshingly old. Listening to their debut-record "step forward" makes you feel like you're a young punk, sitting on a uk-parkbench in 1977. They play electropunk without guitars – and it works. I've seen them live and they are as raw like a rockband. Definately chek them out if you dig old punk music or just good undergroundstuff in general.

__________

16. Ides of Gemini – Constantinople

This album takes you on a trip. Its a very new look on doomy metal, with amtospheric female vocals like you probably never had heard it before. Its going to be a dark and heavy trip so sit down on your couch, put aside sleeps dopesmoker-vinyl and get hypnotized.

http://idesofgemini.com/

__________

17. Dope Body – Natural History

Dope Body is a young quartet who play very energetic garage punk. Their sound is really exceptional and either you like it or you dont. I do and i like those guys aswell. Their concerts have a great energy and this slight pinch of madness make them very entertaining. Listen to this while skateboarding, i guess.

__________

18. Tall Ships – Everything Touching

Someone said "the smiths"!? Yes, when i first heard "gallop" this was the thing that came to my mind. But its more like a good attribute, then anything else. If you listen to the whole album, you quickly notice that they offer more then a song where the singer sounds like morrissey. Its a great mix of indierock and postpunk and they probably have a bright future, which would not come as a surprise with a debutalbum, this good.

http://wearetallships.co.uk/

__________

19. Blood Red Shoes – In Time to Voices

Blood Red Shoes, seem to be the most mainstream band in my list. Their sound could easily play on a regular radiostation, and they probably do. But nonetheless, they know their craft of making catchy music, not only since this album. Usually the band never disappoints, so again, every song on this record stays in your ear, its simply good indierock.

[not allowed to upload a song, check this liveversion of "cold"]

__________

20. Death Grips – No Love Deep Web

Death Grips make heavy minimal hiphop. You will have to listen for yourself to get it. No love deep web, is their second studio album, which caused quite the controversy as it got released by the band for free on the internet, without telling their label epic. They simply didnt wanted to be postponed anylonger, gave a fuck about their contract and posted downloadlinks of the album. This seemed to be the best uninteded marketing-campaign ever, since the album made it on first place of BitTorrent's "List of Most Legally Downloaded Music" on the day of release. Its not as good as their debut "exmilitary" but still a very good album, give it a listen - its free after all.

EPS

1. Westkust – Junk

This EP is awesome, and if it would have been a fulllength album it would have been definately in the top 5. Their shoegazy surf/post-punk music is so fucking good i wanna grab a surfboard and ride down into a dark london drain or something like that. If the beachboys would be reborn again in the modern times and be lawless young punks, it would sound excactly like this.

http://westkust.bandcamp.com/

__________

2. The Prodigy – The Added Fat EP

Do you remember how impressed you where as you heard the prodigy for the first times back in the days? Well i do, and now you can have this feeling all over again. They just released a remixed version of their best record "the fat of the land". All hits you can think of have a totally heavy makeover with mostly dubstep-ish beats that are simply insane. This is the perfect transformation of those 15-year old songs to the year 2012. It never sounded this fresh. If you loved it back in they days, you will be blown away by this ep.

[i wanted to upload the "alvin risk remix" of firestarter, but the label is against it, so here you go with the "smack my bitch up remix", which is also good:]

__________

3. A Dead Forest Index – Antique

How can you make such dark music in sunny australia? Its a great melancholic sound this ep offers, basicially experimenting a lot with a capella vocals and minimal instrumentation which occasionally peaks into almost orchestral moments. Overall its an eerie and deep ep and i am very curious about a fulllenght album.

http://adeadforestindex.bandcamp.com/

__________

4. Future Islands – Cotton Flower

Future Islands cant do anything wrong. This release is certsainly no ep, its one song on a split, but nonetheless its such a great song, i had to list it. It might even the best song ever from future islands.

http://future-islands.com/

__________

5. Cypress Hill & Rusko – Cypress X Rusko EP

Cypress Hill have been the heros of my youth. Black Friday and especially "Hits from the Bong" are responsible some big memories. With the years my interest drifted aways and the band became more dispensable. Now, with their new ep, they did the right thing to get back on the radar: redefine your style. Although they didnt relly redefined their style, they worked together with producer rusko to influence their unique rappingstyle with some heavy dubstepbeats. And it worked out really well. Their sound is fresher then ever and i can only hope that this wont be the last collaboration with rusko.

Whats Your Favorite Albums of 2012?
Until next Year.

On a Sidenote:
I wanted to upload all those songs in a consistent style and playlist on youtube but since some artists/labels dont want that, i had to remove them. Leaves a bit of an bad aftertaste, but its mostly just bigger names that behave like this. Removed the "support-links" to their sites as well.

Mathew Sawyer & The Ghosts - Penny Falls

Mathew sawyer and the ghost plays the most haunting folk i can imagine. he has 223 followers on facebook, so you have an idea on how known he is. to my suprise he seems to be recording a new album. untill it gets released i will listen to the previous albums over and over again, like the last 5 years. they just dont get old...
(check out "blue birds blood")

La Femme - Telegraphe

this is some damn nice and unique mix of surf, wave and post-punk.
i know this female-fronted french band for quite some time now. as i discovered them i predicted to hear a lot from them in the future. but unfortunately they are still under the radar. lets hope they get a bit more known and start touring outside of france. so far they just released some eps – but every song is a winner. i keep my fingers crossed for a full-length album in 2013...

ERASERTUNES 2.0

Welcome to my musicblog.
Since i started a habit of visiting too much concerts, the main focus of this blog will be my concert-reviews. I visited more then 150 concerts this year and have already a full calendar for 2013, so it would be a huge waste to keep those experiances just for myself.
Additionally i will write down my general thoughts on music and reguarly post a "song of the day", so you might discover some new songs you like. I'm a big musicnerd who likes all kinds of genres, so you will find a varied mixture of all tastes.

Und wenn ich zu faul bin, schreib ich die Beiträge einfach auf Deutsch.
Till we meet again, hopefully.

PS. yup i already blogged on here for some time in 2011, but i wasnt motivated and just posted a handfull of youtubevideos. things gonna change. EraserTunes 2.0 Baby!
